25 Handy Household Hints
to make your life easier
by Paul Bannister, National Examiner p. 12, 09 November 1999

Got an army of ants in your kitchen, a clogged drain or a splinter in your finger? Here are 25 fantastic household hints that will cure these problems-and much more!

1. Keep ants out of your home with a simple chalk line-they hate to cross it and will march elsewhere.

2. Unclog a sink drain with three Alka-Seltzer tablets followed with a cup of white vinegar. Wait a few minutes, then run the hot water.

3. Alka-Seltzer will clean a toilet bowl, too. Drop in two tablets, wait 20 minutes, brush and flush. You can also use the fizzy pills to remove a stain from the bottom of a glass or thermos bottle. Fill it with water first, drop in a tablet and let soak.

4. Clean barbecue grill by putting the rack on the lawn overnight. The dew and the grass enzymes will loosen the burned-on grease.

5. Don`t throw out leftover wine.Freeze it into ice cubes and use it in casseroles and sauces.

6. Stuff a miniature marshmallow into the bottom of a sugar cone to stop messy ice cream drips.

7. If you drop an egg on the floor, cover it with salt and leave 20 minutes. Then you can easily sweep it all up.

8. Don`t go through the hassle of frying bacon. Bake it on a broiler pan at 350 degrees for 30 minutes to make it flat and crisp.

9. Stop potatoes from budding in the bag by putting an apple in with them.
10. A pinch of salt in the water will stop eggs from cracking when you boil them.

11. Use a meat baster to squeeze pancake batter onto the gridle-you`ll get perfect hotcakes every time.

12. Forget tweezers and needles. Extract a splinter with adhesive tape. Just put the sticky side over the splinter and peel it off.  It will come out easily and painlessly.

13. Check the accuracy of your kitchen scale. Nine pennies weigh exactly one ounce.

14. Rinse your mouth with vinegar and salt to remove garlic or onion odors from your breath.

15. Use vinegar to thin too-thick glue - just a drop or two is all you'll need.
16. Clean burned on food from a skillet by putting a few drops of dishwashing liquid into enough water to cover the bottom of the pan, then bring it to a boil on the stove.

17. When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a little of the dry cake mix, instead. That way, you'll get no white mess on the outside of the cake.

18. A slice of apple in the bag will soften hardened brown sugar.

19. Rub a half a lime on your forehead to relieve a headache.
20. When you boil corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to bring out the corn's natural sweetness.

21. Wrap celery in aluminum foil before you put it in the fridge - it will keep for weeks.

22. Spray plastic storage containers with non stick cooking spray before you pour in tomato based sauces - no more stains.

23. Beat the Y2K bug in your VCR.  If the video has a year setting, which most do, you won't be able to use the programmed recording feature after Dec. 31, 1999. Don't ditch the VCR. Just reset it for 1972 - the days are the same as the year 2000.

24. To revive soggy potato chips, lay them out in a single layer on a paper towel, then microwave for up to a minute. Let stand for three minutes and the'll be crispy again.

25. Use spray air freshener to clean mirror - it not only does the job, it smells good, too.
